Abstract

Benito Pérez Galdós’ narrative has often been studied in relation to gender imaginaries (Zambrano, 1960; Rugg, 2007; Jiménez Gómez, 2019; among others). However, the role of women as the embodiment of the unspeakable and the forbidden has not yet been considered. Our work proposes an approach to Galdós’ disinherited ladies from the perspective of power dipositifs that shape feminity in nineteenth-century Spanish literature with a disruptive potential. Our interest lies in analyzing Galdosian protagonists as monsters (Foucault, 1999) whose bodies resist against normalization processes. Their teratological condition opens up biopolitical/biopoetical questions about the legitimacy of other narratable life forms.

We focus on the case of Marianela (1878) as we identify in Nela’s textualization a liminality (between life and death, beauty and ugliness, civilization and barbarism, childhood and old age) through which female monsters could be understood like a legal-linguistic status that gestures toward a multiplicity of alternative identity fictions.
